Teaching Philosophy
My first goal is always to build confidence in my students and create a safe and encouraging environment in which to learn. I suspect the phrase my students hear most, aside from remember to breathe, is a variation on “you can do it.” The second is to build a strong and healthy technical foundation so that students will be able to have an enduring singing career, whether they only want to sing in the shower or are working toward Broadway. Efficiency of function is the key. My aim as a voice teacher is to use a science-informed approach to aid my students’ artistry. The third goal comes from the ever-present acting question: “Why are you singing?” to always focus on the driving action of a song so that the singer can emotionally connect with the material to deliver a moving performance. Singing is first and foremost communication. While a strong basis of technique allows the freedom of expression to make that communication possible, a technically imperfect but expressive and connected performance will always serve the student.
